Accurate and durable: Purpose-built for Brinell testing in almost any shop floor environment

The Sentinel features an entirely new frame design; built around the immensely successful, field-proven Foundrax test head and BRINtronic automatic Brinell microscope – still the most accurate and reliable in the industry.  Measurement error is virtually eliminated and results are displayed instantly.  The test piece is rigidly clamped at the start of the indenting cycle to eliminate any possibility of movement and the test force is monitored 125 times per second and adjusted to ensure it is within strict tolerances at all times.  The load cell is purpose-built for Brinell testing; not an off-the-shelf model pushed to its limits. As the anvil is fixed, a conveyor system can be substituted, allowing the safe manoeuvring of heavy and unwieldy components into and out of test position, with significant reduction in risk to operators.  The moving head also reduces test times by eliminating the need to wind the anvil up and down. The Sentinel exceeds the requirements of ISO 6506 and ASTM E-10 and comes with a certificate of calibration from our UKAS-accredited laboratory. Like all our Brinell testers, the Sentinel is built to withstand many years of use in the rigours of a typical foundry, forge or steelworks.  For those organisations carrying out thousands of tests per week, we designed the BRINscan MkV.   This machine is designed to perform millions of tests with minimal downtime, indeed, one BRINscan carried out 30 million tests before being ‘retired’ (just as a precaution; it was still working).

The standard model 134 portable hardness tester consists of a 29 420N (3000kgf) capacity test head mounted on a high-quality base. The test head is hand-wound to the appropriate height for each component.

These Brinell testers have been used all over the World for over 50 years in the defence, aerospace, oil, mining and transport industries, as well as in foundries, forges, steelworks and heat-treatment plants. Thousands of them are in service; several of which are over 50 years-old and still performing reliably.

134 Accessories

The Model 134 is supplied with three small anvils; flat, V-type and domed (numbers 2, 4 and 5 respectively in the picture).  A large sprung V (1) and reverse adapter (3) are available at additional charge.

The Foundrax BRINscan MKV is a high-speed, heavy duty fully-automatic Brinell hardness tester fitted with a BRINtronic automatic Brinell microscope, suitable for off-line and in-line use.

The BRINscan machines in the example shown are used for testing railway wheels.  The film shows a special-purpose machine with horizontal configuration as well as a standard machine used with a walking beam-type conveyor. The Foundrax BRINscan has been proven in operational use over many years to be capable of performing millions of Brinell hardness tests reliably in industrial conditions. The BRINscan is extremely robust with a fixed test table (400mm x 400mm approximately) capable of carrying components of up to 10 tonnes as standard, and features a moving test head which descends onto the test surface and then clamps the component in place. The stationary test table means that the machine is well suited for fitting into a line.]]>

The BRINscan MkIII shown in the example below performed over 30 million tests and was used to test tank track links for the British Army.  It was still performing perfectly when replaced by our BRINscan MkV.

The BRINscan MkIII shown in this video eventually performed over 30 million tests on tank track links for the British Army before its precautionary ‘retirement’ (it was still in full working order).

The clamping system is independent of the indentation system.  It clamps with a force greater than the indentation force (3500 Kgf) to ensure that there is no movement of the test piece during the Brinell hardness test.

The test cycle is fully automatic and authentic with no operator influence over the indentation or measurement process.

The length of the test cycle can be set or altered by authorised personnel via password-protected software and is held in the system memory (if required).  The cycle time can also be set during the initial installation.

The automatic authentic optical Brinell measurement of the indentation is performed using an integral Foundrax BRINtronic fully automatic Brinell microscope which is fully networkable to allow for automatic downloading of batch parameters and uploading of results to the customer network if required.

The BRINscan fully meets the requirements of ISO 6506 and ASTM E10 and is available with a certificate of calibration from our UKAS-accredited laboratory prior to despatch if required.

The fully automatic machine cycle means that all the operator needs to do is load the component onto the test table and press a footswitch.

After the test has been completed the result appears on the monitor and the operator removes the component. If the machine is put into a line, components may be fed to it automatically and the machine cycle initiated automatically.

All elements of the machine cycle are operator-variable and recorded, with the exception of calibration, which is not operator variable.
